E-Bike vs Mountain Bike: Which Should You Rent in Mammoth Lakes?

We get this question at the shop every day: “Should I rent an e-bike or a mountain bike?” Here’s how to choose what’s best for your ride.

Rent a mountain bike if...

You want the full workout, you're comfortable climbing under your own power, or you're planning to ride inside the Mammoth Mountain Bike Park where lifts and shuttles do the climbing for you anyway. If you're an experienced rider chasing technical single track, a standard mountain bike gives you a lighter, more responsive ride that's easier to maneuver on tight, technical terrain.

Rent an e-bike if...

You want to cover more ground without wearing yourself out, especially at altitude. Mammoth sits around 8,000 feet, and that thin air catches a lot of visitors off guard on their first day. An e-bike gives you a boost on the climbs so you can spend more energy enjoying the views and less energy just trying to breathe. It's also a great option for families riding together at different fitness levels, since an e-bike helps everyone keep a similar pace.

A few things to know before you decide

E-bikes are heavier and less nimble on tight, technical singletrack. If you plan to ride trails like Mammoth Rock or Lower Rock Creek, a standard mountain bike is usually the better choice.

E-bikes are best suited for paved paths like the Lakes Basin Path and Town Loop, along with designated OHV routes and bike park trails where they are permitted. Because they are not allowed on many of Mammoth’s non-motorized trails, where you plan to ride should factor into your decision.

E-bikes are not permitted on the following trails:

  • Sherwin Meadows
  • Mammoth Rock Trail and connecting trails
  • Lower Rock Creek Trail
  • Horseshoe Lake Loop

For more information, review the E-Bike Etiquette Guide from Mammoth Lakes Tourism.

Our recommendation

If this is your first time riding at altitude, or you're planning a longer day covering a lot of miles, get the e-bike. If you're an experienced rider looking for a technical, physical challenge, stick with a standard mountain bike. And if you're not sure, come by Footloose Sports and tell us what you're hoping to do that day. We'll point you toward the right bike, no guesswork needed.
