When Should You Rent, Demo, or Own Your Ski Gear?
If you’ve got a Mammoth trip coming up, there’s a good chance you’re asking yourself this questions...
Should I rent, demo, or bring my own ski gear?
Honestly, there’s no single right answer. It depends on how often you ski, what kind of trip you’re taking, and what conditions of the mountain.
Mammoth weather can often change overnight. Our staff skis at Mammoth, so when conditions change, we know exactly what equipment is skiing best on the mountain that day. Whether it's a powder day, hard packed, or slush.
When Renting Gear Makes the Most Sense
For a lot of skiers and snowboarders, renting makes a lot of sense.
Especially if:
- You only ski a few times a year
- You’re flying into Mammoth
- You’re bringing kids
- You’re newer to skiing or snowboarding
- You don’t want to deal with hauling gear around
And let’s be real: dragging ski bags through airports, parking lots, hotels, and condos is not exactly the glamorous part of a ski trip.
A lot of Southern California visitors drive up Friday night after work, grab rentals in town, and hit the lifts early the next morning without the hassle.
The key is renting from a shop that actually takes the time to fit you correctly. Boots matter way more than most people realize.
Bad boot fit can ruin your entire day faster than bad snow.
That’s one reason so many visitors trust Footloose Sports for ski rentals and snowboard rentals in Mammoth. We've spent 40+ years dialing in fit, comfort, and the right setup based on your ability level and current mountain conditions — not just handing you equipment and sending you out the door.

When Demos Makes Sense
Demo skis make sense if:
- You’re curious about newer higher-performance gear
- You’re considering buying new skis or boots, but want to try them out first
- There’s a storm coming
- You're leveling up and have outgrown your current setup
And Mammoth is one of the best places to test demo skis because conditions here change constantly.
You might ski:
- packed powder in the morning
- chopped-up bowls midday
- soft spring snow in the afternoon
- powder after a storm cycle
Different skis shine in different conditions.
One of the biggest advantages of our demo program is that if you fall in love with your demo skis or boots, a portion of your demo fees can be applied toward the purchase of new gear.
It’s one of the best ways to test skis in real-world conditions before committing to a setup.
You can spend a full day skiing Mammoth terrain, see how the skis perform in changing snow, and make a much more informed decision before buying.

What Do We Recommend?
Here’s the simple version.
Rent when: You want convenience, you ski occasionally, or you’re traveling light.
Demo when: You want better performance, or looking to upgrade your gear but not sure what you'd like to buy yet.
Bring your own when: You ski a lot and already have gear you genuinely love for the conditions of the mountain.
